The march from Selma, Al to Montgomery was stopped at the Pettus Bridge. Fifty marchers were hospitalized after police used tear gas, whips, and clubs against them. Later this year, the Voter Rights Act was signed. Malcolm X was assassinated and the great Nat "King" Cole died. The cost of a first class stamp was 5 cents.
