Thank You

THANK YOU! THANK YOU! THANK YOU!

Thank you for joining us for the 31st mid-winter conference. The survey results indicate that the conference was a tremendous success. It is all because of you! For the 347 individuals that registered, I say "Thank You". For those that purchased luncheon, Motown Revue, or banquet tickets, you helped to make all of the events a success. I hope you took away memories that will last until next year's conference in Houston.
Again, thank you and I'll see you in Houston!

D-Day Begins Tomorrow

The fireworks starts tomorrow. We're ready! Are you? There will be more purple and gold in Michigan over the next few days than we have ever seen. Usually we see maize and blue (Michigan) and green and white (Michigan State) with a few other colors in between. But purple and gold will bring a display of pride, dignity, and royalty. Let's show everyone how we love "Alcorn" by showing our colors and our sense of family. See you in the "D"!

Attendees from the Class of 1970

Well 1970 graduates, I held out as long as I could. I just knew you would not let me down. I'm sorry to say that not enough of us came through. We came in second place with the number of graduates registered. The class of 1965 beat us. To date, they have 26 individuals registered. We have 23 and they are: Emma Allen, Lemore Allen, Randy Barnes, Robert E. Cole, Connie Coleman, Deloris P. Doster, Bettye Eichelberger, Spencena J. Hinton, Belinda P. Johnson, H. C. Johnson, Mary B. Johnson, Vera L. Mannery, Johnnie L. Moore, Bessie Norwood, Josephine M. Posey, Betty J. Rojas, John Smith, Willie J. Taylor, Jr., Robert Tucker, Donald Vardaman, Patricia Vardaman, Jo Ella Walls, and Irma. R. Walton. Even though we are second in numbers, let show everyone how much we care about each other and Alcorn.
Starting tomorrow, we will start the conference countdown!

Attendees from Class of 1964

I am getting close to the end of the class list. Today’s list from the class of 1964 is next to the last class to be published. But believe me it is just as important as the first because the following individuals were a member of that class: Willie O. Brown, Henry Harris, Wiley F. Jones, Charlie S. Parker, Lillian B. Townsend, Gladys Z. Vaughn, and Harper B. Wilson. Two from Michigan and five from Mississippi. What was happening in Michigan and Mississippi in 1964? In Michigan, Ford rolled out the first Mustang and Malcolm X delivered his "The Ballot or the Bullet" speech. In Mississippi, the civil rights movement suffered some of its worst blows: Schwerner, Goodman, and Chaney were murdered and Henry Hezekiah Dee and Charles Eddie Moore were beaten to death in Meadville. But there were positive strives also: the Mississippi Freedom Democratic Party registered more than 60,000 voters and sends its own delegation to the Democratic National Convention. Fannie Lou Hamer made a passionate pitch for inclusion at the convention. The delegation was not seated but their presence and argument had a lasting impact of politics. Where is the rest of the class of 1964?

Attendees from Class of 1963

What happened in 1963...etched in all our minds is the assassination of John F. Kennedy. Most of us can remember where we were on Friday, November 22, 1963. The following individuals had graduated from Alcorn about 6 months earlier: Mordine Bailey, Alice G. Brown, Oliver Brown, Jr., Willie M. T. Carter, Charles F. Christian, Delphine W. Coleman,Juanita D. Harper, Savannah B. Hill, James W. Hill, Artis H. Lewis, Joseph Lloyd,Mary A. Martin, Daisye R. McGee, Freddie L. Owens (deceased), Monroe Stewart Jr., Helen M. Warner, Doris F. Williams, Jessie A.W. Wilson, and Edith O. Wright. The march on Washington took place where Dr. King recited his "I have a dream" speech. Four little girls were killed when the 16th Baptist Church was bombed in Birmingham, AL. George Wallace, then governor of Alabama, stood in the door of the University of Alabama and promised segregation "today, tomorrow, and forever". That was 45 years ago...yet not that long. That brings me to our conference theme: Alcornites Stepping Up---Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow! We can't go back! Only you can continue to take us forward.

The 30's

What happened in the 30's? Well, FDR was president. The great depression continued and unemployment was around 20%. Why am I talking about the 30's? Because we are blessed to have two individuals that will be attending the conference that graduated from Alcorn during that era. Mr. Calvin Rhodes of Detroit, MI graduated in 1934 and Mrs. Ernestine Watson of Vine Grove, KY graduated in 1938. How many of you knew that during that time Alcorn operated a high school that led directly into the college? Truly a college prep high school!

In 1935, Congress passed the Social Security Act creating a federal retiree pension system. However 73 years later, it questionable how long it will it will last. In 1938, Joe Louis knocked out German's Max Schmeling in the first round for the heavyweight championship. In the 30's, black swing was golden. It was led by Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, Ella Fitzgerald, Billie Holiday, and many others. Ella Fitzgerald had her first hit record with the Chuck Webb Band "A-Tisket, A-Tasket. During the period from 1935 to 1938, gasoline was 10 cents a gallon, a loaf of bread was 8 and 9 cents, and you could buy a car for $625 to $763. I don't know how much a mule and wagon cost, but I'm sure there were more sales of them than cars.

Attendees from the 1980's

As of today, we have 318 individuals that have registered for the conference. Among them are the following individuals from the 1980's (1980-1989): Sandra Crowley, Karen G. Matlock, Lillie Stewart, Judith Ward, Calola Williams, William Sanders, Jacqueline Shorter, Zelda Jones Hines, Dywane T. Powell, Esther Ramsom, Marvin Rankin, and Sam Washington. By the 1980's, Motown had left Detroit for the warm weather of California. But the change in location didn't stop the old groups from putting out the hits. Releases included Diana Ross and Lionel Ritchie's "Endless Love", Marvin Gaye's "Sexual healing", and Stevie Wonder's "I just called to say I love you". Kool & The Gang sang "There's a party goin' on right here...Let's Celebrate". The Cosby Show premiered in 1984 and kept people glued to their TV until 1992. Stone washed jeans were introduced and now they are mainstay. In 1986, about 73 seconds into its launch, the space shuttle Challenger exploding killing the entire crew of seven including Ronald McNair, the second black astronaut to be on a space flight.

Conference Attendees from 1960 - 1962

The 2008 conference begins 3 weeks from today. Are you ready? Detroit is ready for you! OK ladies, it time to go shopping for that knock-out outfit for the banquet. The attire for that event is formal/after five. So you have three weeks to find just the right thing.

The following individuals from the classes of 1960, 1961, and 1962 are ready. So join John Trammel, Deloris Cagins, Christler Chaffee, Erlexia L. Johnson, Emma S. Jordan, Barbara B. Quinn, Christine L. Simmons, Dora P. Simpson, Mary L. Smith, Larry Claiborne, James Clark, Pearl Clark, Sheral A. Jones, James U. Paige, Celia G. Pearson, Bertha L. Reed,Willie N. Simpson, Grace S. Smith, Emma B. Stamps, Elnois Tucker, James L. Tucker, Queen C. Van Norman, Mary R. Wiley, Doris Williams, Malvin A. Williams, and Tina Williams in stepping up and stepping out in style. While these folks were studying and hanging out on the "yard", what else was going on? John F. Kennedy was elected President, Alan Shepard made the first U.S space flight, and four students from North Carolina A & T begin sit-in at a segregated Woolworth lunch counter. The first Walmart was opened in 1962 in Bentonville, AR. We could make breakfast for the entire family for less than $1.50 with bacon at 67 cents a pound, eggs at 30 cents a dozen and make biscuits with flour at 49 cents for a 5 pound bag. After eating a big breakfast, we could exercise it all off by dancing to Chubby Checker's songs: "The Twist", "Huckebuck", "Pony Time" and "Limbo Rock". We lost weight because there was a"Whole Lotta Shaken Goin'On".

1971 and 1972 Attendees

Last Day to Get Your Registration Postmarked

Today's attendees are from the years of 1971 and 1972. Remember the year of graduation is as accurate as your registration form. So these individuals put 1971 and 1972 on their form: Martha B. Aikens, Lecrease Hicks, Eunice Hollingworth, Bernice W.Maxwell, Annie M. Moffett, Betty H. Mosley, Vivian Brandon, Lettie S. Brox, Jewell Cole, Harry Crockett, John Evans, Patricia Moncrief-Maxie, Alvin Moore, Richard A. Mosley, Dorothy K. Wilbourn. These years saw some firsts: Shirley Chisholm, the first African American congresswoman, announced her candidacy for president of the United States; Bob Douglas was the first African American elected to the Basketball Hall of Fame; and Satchel Paige was voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame. These were the disco years. We danced to Aretha Franklin's "Rock Steady", Kool and the Gang's "Love the Life you Live",and Denise Lasalle's "Trapped by a Thing Call Love". In 1971, the Nasdaq debuted and in 1972, the Dow closes above 1,000 for the first time. Nike debuted it "Swoosh" trademark and FedEx started up. If I had only known then what I know now, I could afford someone else to keep this site updated. In 1971, a gallon of gas was 40 cents, a first-class stamp 8 cents, and a movie ticket average $1.50. Those were the good old days!

Prater, Floyd Stewart, Bennye Hayes, Elijah Moore, Helen Moore, Esther M. Rigsby, John D. Rigsby. In music, Nat King Cole was on a roll. His hit records: Mona Lisa ('50), Too Young ('51), Pretend ('53), and Answer Me My Love ('54) kept everyone humming. At the end of that period in 1954, Hank Aaron began his career with the Milwaukee Braves. Yes, you youngster---that is not a mistake, the Braves (now the Atlanta Braves) started in Milwaukee. 1954 was also the year of the historic Brown vs Board of Education decision. In that year, you could buy a Ford, made in Detroit, for $1,548; buy a gallon of milk for 92 cents; a gallon of gas for 21 cents; a loaf of bread for 17 cents, and if you were really rich, you could buy a T-bone steak for 95 cent a pound. Of course, some of us grew our own T-bone steak. It was called a "cow".

Conference Transportation Instructions

Train
Roundtrip bus transportation for the group that is arriving at the Detroit Amtrak Station at 6:49 PM on 2/21/08 and back to the Train Station on 2/24/08 has been arranged. Roundtrip cost is $25.00 per person (includes gratuities) payable to Mr. Charles Davis during your arrival train trip. Since contract for buses must be guaranteed, there will be no refund for anyone that decides to return to train station other than by bus. On 2/24/08, the return bus is estimated to begin boarding at 9:30 AM and depart from the hotel at 10:00 AM. This will ensure that luggage is loaded and unloaded in a timely manner.

Airport (Shared Passenger Service)
Agreement with Aristocat Limousine Services has been arranged to transport conference attendees to the hotel and back. Reservations must be made at least 24 to 48 hours prior to arrival and must be guaranteed by credit card. Credit card will not be charged until completion of service. Once reserved, cancellation must be made at least 4 hours prior to scheduled airport arrival. Agreement requires that a minimum of 3 passengers must be present to obtain the lowest rates. When advance reservations are made, airport transportation will average from $25.00 to $35.00 per person each way depending on how many arrive in the same time window. If advance reservations are not made, or if one person decides to take limo alone, transportation can exceed $75.00 each way. Limo driver will meet passengers in the airport baggage claim area with Alcorn sign.

To reserve Airport Transportation, contact Aristocat Limousine by phone from 9:00 AM to midnight (leave message if no answer). HAPPY MLK DAY

As we remember Dr. Martin Luther King today and pledge to keep his dream alive: let's remember how he stepped up during the bus boycott in Montgomery, AL in 1955; remember how he stepped up to lead the Southern Leadership Conference in 1957; remember how he stepped up and was named the "Man of the Year" by Time Magazine in 1963; remember how he stepped up with his "I have a Dream" speech during the march on Washington in 1963; remember how he stepped up and was the youngest man to receive the Nobel Peace Prize in 1964; and remember the ultimate in stepping up--giving his life in Memphis, TN in 1968.

Now it is your time to step up and give back to Alcorn State University. Take the first step by registering for the 2008 Mid-Winter Alumni Conference to be held in Detroit, MI on February 21 - 24, 2008. You won't be sorry!
